We are looking strengthen our cable engineering capacity and capability knowing that our key clients have a large forward workload of HV cable projects.

The role

We are currently seeking a talented Principal HV Cable Design Engineer to join the Niko team.

Your role will centre on leading, executing, and contributing to upgrades and new site developments for both Transpower and our generation & distribution clients.

Although your primary focus will be on HV (110kV and 220kV) cable projects, you will also provide your skills and experience to support MV (33kV and 11kV) cabling projects and will have the opportunity and variety of other substation projects should you choose.

You might not have experience at the principal engineer level – we welcome applications from candidates at the intermediate, senior and principal level.

As the industry experiences significant growth driven by decarbonisation efforts and the maintenance of existing assets across hydro, geothermal, thermal, and wind sectors, Niko Engineering is poised to expand its capabilities to support clients. The experience you do bring to the table will be invaluable to both Niko and our clients.

Key aspects of this role include:

  • Developing designs from option studies through to detailed designs, technical specifications, and reports for electrical upgrade and new build projects
  • Communicating and coordinating project activities with others
  • Developing relationships with our clients
  • Preparation of proposals for design tenders
  • Understanding and keeping abreast of International Standards, New Zealand and Australian Standards, and legislative requirements
  • Carrying out quality assurance reviews of work by other Engineers.

We are on the lookout for an exceptional candidate who aligns with our vision and values. Our ideal candidate:

  • Is a Chartered Engineer or is working towards accreditation.
  • Is tertiary qualified in electrical engineering preferred; significant industry experience considered
  • Has a passion for the electricity industry, problem-solving, and demonstrates initiative.
  • Can work both independently and collaboratively.
  • Has excellent communication, presentation, and computer skills.
  • Has a strong focus on continuous learning and development.

Our preferred work location is Hamilton however we are open to candidates from Christchurch, Auckland, and other locations.

 

Experience By Level

  • Intermediate level: 4+ years’ experience in electrical design engineering, with some experience in MV and HV cable engineering.
  • Senior level: 8 years’ experience, specialising in cable engineering at 110kV and above.
  • Principal level: 15+ years’ experience, specialising in cable engineering at 110kV and above.

This is a full-time, salaried role, 40 hours per week during usual business hours. Niko offer a competitive salary (From $100,000 for Intermediate engineers, and high above this for Senior and Principal engineers).

The expected start date for the role is 1 June 2024.
